Do I need a referral to see a

psychologist?

You don’t need a Mental Health Care Plan or GP referral to see a psychologist; however, you need one to claim Medicare rebates.

What are the fees involved?

The Australian Psychological Society current schedule of recommended fees suggests a fee of $311 to see a psychologist for appointments between 46 - 60 minutes. With the intention of increasing accessibility to mental health services, our fees are set below the APS recommended rate.

Medicare Rebate

You may be eligible to access a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP or referral from your psychiatrist, which would enable you to receive a Medicare rebate of up to $96.65 per session.

Your MHCP must be dated on or before your session in order to claim the rebate. The Medicare rebate is typically available for up to ten sessions per calendar year.

Private Health Cover

Sessions are often able to be reimbursed by most private health care funds. This reimbursement cannot be claimed in conjunction with Medicare. Speak with your insurer to see what benefits you may be eligible for.
